Air

Denver International Airport (DIA), one of the world's most modern and efficient airports, is owned and operated by the City and County of Denver. Located 23 miles northeast of downtown Denver, DIA is the primary airport serving the Metro Denver region. DIA is the fifth busiest airport in the U.S. and 10th busiest in the world.

The $4.2 billion facility encompasses 53 square miles, making DIA twice the size of Manhattan Island. Opened in 1995, DIA is the only major airport built in the U.S. in the past 25 years.

The airport is home to 30 commercial airlines providing nonstop service to over 140 domestic and international destinations in the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, and Mexico.

Passenger Growth Spurs Expansion

DIA handled a record 49,863,352 passengers in 2007, an increase of 5.4 percent over the previous year. Passenger growth has led to a review of DIA's master plan.

The first phase will address expansion of the passenger train, development and improvements to the existing terminal, and integration of passenger rail to and from the airport as part of FasTracks, the region's $7.9 billion, 12-year mass transit project. The second phase will focus on long-range airport planning.

In 2007, the airport announced a plan to build a terminal hotel, additional security areas, expanded parking, and an upgraded baggage and train network. DIA also opened a two-megawatt solar system in August 2008 expected to generate 3.5 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean electricity annually.
